"Preserving the history of the parish of Sleat on the Isle of Skye"
This collection is a combination of several sources. In the 1990s the History Society set up a project to collect local place names. Funders of the project included Skye & Lochalsh Local Enterprise Company and the Highland Council. The names collected by the project officer, Coinneach MacManus are marked CM in the lists.
Place names found in The Place Names of Skye by Alexander Forbes (published 1923) have been included. They are marked with an F. Those found on the Ordnance Survey Maps are marked with OS while those contributed by members of the History society at various meetings are marked PNP.
Where locations are known a six figure grid reference is also included.
At present the names are arranged alphabetically. Just click on a letter in the right-hand column to see names begining with that letter. We also plan to include placenames arranged according to district, on the website.
The names collected by Coinneach MacManus were marked up on maps of the area (scale: six inch to the mile), with each name having an individual number on a map. This is what is referred to by references such as MAP.4.21. These maps are not yet online so are only avaiable for consultation in the Society’s archive.
If anyone has information on the location names without a grid reference or can add any new ones to the collection please contact the society.
Similarly if you spot any spelling mistakes or think there are mistranslations, please get in touch.
