Population Table

A simple chart showing population trends in the parish between 1755 and 2001.

sleatpopulation

This chart is based on information from the censuses taken every 10 years from 1801, and Dr Alexander Webster’s census of Scotland, made in 1755. Webster’s census was based on information provided by parish ministers.

Between 1801 and 1811 there was apparently very little increase in the parish population. this can be explained by the high level of emigration from Sleat during this period. For instance, the estate factor records nearly 100 families emigrating to North Carolina in 1803. Taking the average family size as 8 (two parents and six children) this would have amounted to nearly 800 people leaving Sleat in that year alone.
